From Blackberry Winter by Margaret Mead

“My decision to become an anthropologist was based in part on my belief that a scientist, even one that had no great and special gift such as a great artist must have, could make a useful contribution to knowledge” (555).

Reading this passage from Blackberry Winter is so refreshing to read. Margaret Mead is a truly fascinating person. She talks casually to record her travels and discoveries, and yet, the experiences she has are far from casual or normal. Even with this tone that is more like a personal diary or journal, it is easy to see Margaret’s passion and intelligence in her writing.

One thing she wishes to stress in her writing is the importance of anthropologists being fully prepared to begin field study work (558). Margaret Mead is surrounded by educated men (like her professors and father) that support her academic efforts fully and wish for her to be secure and efficient with her findings while in the field (555). Other young anthropologists have mentors who encourage them to jump in without understanding basic language, deciding upon a focused course of study for their travels, and not knowing how to use helpful technology (558). This “occupational disease” makes Margaret even more passionate in her work, even though she herself often feels unprepared due to the many unforeseen misfortunes or changes she endures during her time in Samoa (560).

She also discusses the difficulty of adopting a new way of life and being accepted by a new group of people (564). I think this struggle may relate to the title Blackberry Winter. Perhaps she feels she is a blooming, ripe fruit, who appears foreign in this new environment she must work in.

I think Margaret’s career is a great example of female intelligence and professionalism. Her focus and passion will hopefully inspire more to record the lives and culture of those who are unknown.

  1. I absolutely love your interpretation of the title. Not many woman had this high stature of education which defiantly makes her an outlier. Being a woman, she can be seen metaphorically as a Blackberry in the Winter time as blackberry is refreshing and these men aren't used to this dynamic.
